The Defence Headquarters has confirmed the continuation of coordinated military operations against fighters of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) in Nigeria’s North-East, with fresh air strikes reportedly carried out in the Metele area of Borno State.

In a statement issued on Monday, the military said the operations were conducted in close collaboration with the United States Africa Command, targeting of ISIS-linked militants following intelligence indicating the movement and regrouping of terrorist elements.

According to the statement, multiple air strikes were executed, resulting in the killing of more than 20 fighters affiliated with ISIS and its regional affiliate, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The Defence Headquarters said the latest offensive forms part of an intensified campaign to dismantle terrorist networks in the region, coming shortly after the reported neutralisation of a senior ISIS commander, Abu-Bilal al-Minuki.

Military authorities stressed that the sustained operations are aimed at degrading the operational capacity of insurgent groups, removing them from the battlefield and preventing the establishment of safe havens within Nigeria’s borders.

“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will continue to aggressively defend the sovereignty, security and territorial integrity of the nation,” the statement read, adding that all threats to national stability would be decisively confronted.

The military reiterated its resolve to track and eliminate terrorist elements across the country, declaring that no part of Nigeria would serve as a refuge for insurgents.
