2027 Will Be My Last Presidential Bid, Says Atiku

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has declared that the 2027 general election will be his last attempt at Nigeria’s presidency.

Atiku made the disclosure on Wednesday during an interview on Arise TV, contrasting his earlier stance of remaining in the race for as long as he is fit.

The African Democratic Congress chieftain, who will be 80 years old by the next election cycle, has contested for the presidency multiple times and lost.

Since returning to partisan politics in 2003, Atiku had appeared on the ballot three times – 2007, 2019 and 2023.

Responding to a question on whether turning 80 by 2027 would raise the stakes for him, Atiku said it would likely be his final attempt.

“Certainly yes, because the stakes are higher, and I believe that will be my last outing,” he said.

While outlining his political outlook, the former vice-president emphasised the need for younger Nigerians to build experience under the guidance of established leaders before seeking top offices.

“I personally believe that they require experience and tutelage from the older generation,” he said.

Atiku, who was the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, defected to the ADC in 2025.

His latest position contrasts with his earlier declaration in 2024, when he expressed readiness to remain in the race indefinitely.

“Of course, I will keep contesting again and again as long as I am alive and healthy,” Abubakar had said.
