Ten villagers have lost their lives in a fresh boat mishap that occured on Thursday in shiroro local council of Niger state.The boat which had 34 persons on board bore capsized was en route from
Zangoro Bassa/Kukoki Ward terminal to Gijiwa/Kato Ward terminal in Shiroro.
Officials of the Niger state Emergency Management Agency NSEMA reported that Water hyacinth, strong waves, and a grafting tree contributed to the mishap.
This recent death has increased the number of deaths in 4 boat mishaps to 65 between september and November.
The Niger ministry of transportation held a meeting with boat owners in last month in October to discuss measures to mitigate against further boat mishaps. The boat owners from Shiroro axis complained about not having access life jackets.
According to reports the passengers were not putting on life jackets which would have guaranteed their safety on water till help comes .
So far only one body has been recovered and 9 still missing while search operations is ongoing.
