Wole Soyinka at 90: Alake of Egbaland urges FG to declare July 13 national celebration

The Alake and Paramount ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo has called on the Federal Government to honour Wole Soyinka with the second highest National Honour (GCON) and declare his birthday, July 13th as national celebration.

Based on his achievements and contributions to national and global development, the Alake and Paramount ruler of Egbaland has called on the federal government to honour Wole Soyinka with the second highest National Honour (GCON) and make his birthday, July 13th a national celebration

The monarch made this known in Abeokuta while speaking on activities outlined by the palace for the celebration of Wole Soyinka’s 90th birthday.

The monarch who declared July 13th as Wole Soyinka day for Egba sons and daughters across the world said the theme of the celebration this year is: Defiance and creativity -A celebration of Soyinka’s artistic ingenuity and impact on Nigeria, Africa and the entire world.

He said the two days event would be held on July 12th and 13th 2024 at June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta.

He added that activities of the celebration include, arts exhibition, books exhibition, documentary, cultural performances, poetry and hunting expedition by hunters from Egbaland.

Other speakers at the events described Wole Soyinka as a unique being who deserved to be celebrated for his works and efforts on good governance, peace and development and called for improved reading culture among youths.
