The United Nations has stressed the need for states in Nigeria to implement the Action Plan for promoting women issues, peace and security.

The global body shared its thought in Abuja at a one-day consultative engagement organised by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies for women and mediators in Plateau and Kaduna States.

United Nations Resolution 1325 of year 2000, urges all actors to increase the participation of women and incorporate gender perspectives in all United Nations peace and security efforts.

Objectives of the Action plan include prevention of conflict and all forms of violence against women and girls, institute coping mechanisms and systems for averting and mitigating disasters.

Nigeria has domesticated the plan but only 15 of its 36 states and the FCT have keyed into it so far.

This gathering is to reinforce the need for states to implement the action plan.

The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies says without the assistance of the parliament, the implementation of States Action Plan, SAP and Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, VAPP may not be realised

The Plateau State government is proud to say it was the first to gazette the VAPP law.

It challenges women to rise and ensure their voices are heard

A former Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja also shared his perspectives on the women integration and states action plan.

Issues surrounding protection of Women have gained more prominence around the World in the last few years especially with the proliferation of conflicts across many regions of the World.

Nigeria has also become a major talking point on issues affecting Women and Gender based Violence following the eruption of an Islamist insurgency in 2009 and its spread from its original place of origins to Other parts of the Country as an evolved threat.
