Suspected hoodlums armed with cutlasses, sticks, and other dangerous weapons have launched a violent attack on a senior officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), killing him in broad daylight while on duty at Shuwarin Market in Jigawa State.
The officer, Superintendent Bashir Adamu Jibril, was carrying out an arrest when he was surrounded and attacked by the mob.
He sustained fatal injuries and was later confirmed dead at Dutse General Hospital.
Authorities say one of the suspected ringleaders has been arrested, while others remain at large.
The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Jigawa State has confirmed the death of one of its officers, Superintendent Bashir Adamu Jibril, who was attacked and killed by suspected hoodlums while on duty.
The incident happened at about 1:30pm at Shuwarin Market in Kiyawa Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The officer, attached to the Intelligence and Investigation Department, had just effected the arrest of a criminal suspect when a group of suspected hoodlums launched a violent attack.
The NSCDC has vowed to bring all those responsible to justice and has condemned the attack as a brutal act of lawlessness against the Nigerian state.
He was taken to Dutse General Hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.
The NSCDC said one of the suspected ringleaders has been arrested, and a manhunt is underway to apprehend others still at large.
In a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the Command, ASC Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, the Corps condemned the attack as a barbaric act of jungle justice and vowed to bring all perpetrators to justice.
The Command described the late officer as a dedicated and courageous professional who served the nation with honour and integrity.
The NSCDC is urging members of the public to support lawful efforts to combat crime and to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
The Command has assured the family of the deceased and the wider public that justice will be pursued to its fullest extent.
