Nigeria booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with a commanding 4–0 victory over Mozambique at the Complexe Sportif de Fés in Morocco.
The three-time African champions produced a polished all-round performance in the Round of 16 clash, with Victor Osimhen scoring twice, while Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams also got on the scoresheet to seal a comprehensive win.
The Super Eagles asserted their authority from the opening moments. Osimhen had the ball in the net as early as the second minute, but the effort was ruled out for offside. Nigeria continued to apply pressure, with Alex Iwobi testing Mozambique goalkeeper Ernan with a long-range strike.
The deadlock was broken in the 20th minute when Iwobi split the defence with a well-weighted pass to Akor Adams, who unselfishly squared the ball for Lookman to finish with precision.
The goal, Lookman’s third of the tournament, put Eric Chelle’s side firmly in control.

Nigeria doubled their advantage five minutes later. Iwobi again initiated the move, finding Lookman on the left flank. His low cross, slightly deflected, fell kindly to Osimhen, who tapped in from close range. The Super Eagles dominated the remainder of the first half and went into the break with a deserved 2–0 lead.
Any hopes of a Mozambique revival were dashed shortly after the restart. Lookman once more turned provider, weaving past defenders before setting up Osimhen to calmly score his second goal of the night and Nigeria’s third.
The pressure continued as Nigeria dictated the tempo, and the rout was completed in the 75th minute when Lookman delivered his third assist of the match. This time, Akor Adams powered a fierce shot into the roof of the net to cap an emphatic display.
Nigeria comfortably saw out the closing stages, completing a convincing win and taking their goal tally to 12 for the tournament — the highest by any team so far.
Lookman was deservedly named Man of the Match, earning his second such award at the competition after his standout performance against Tunisia. The forward has now recorded three goals and several assists in the tournament, underlining his importance to the Super Eagles’ campaign.
Nigeria will now focus on Saturday’s quarter-final, where they will face the winner of the Round of 16 encounter between Algeria and DR Congo, scheduled for today.
