A new police commissioner, Mohammed Usman, has been posted to Sokoto state to take over the affairs of the command, after the promotion of the former Commissioner of police Kamaldeen Okunlola to the rank of Assistant Inspector of Police AIG.
During his maiden press briefing, the new Commissioner of Police reiterates commitment to working in partnership other sister security agencies to fight the rising insecurity in the state.
He call on officers and men of the command to remain resolute in fighting terrorism and other violent crimes so as to help reduce the cost of human and material resources the government is committing to this cause.
The new commissioner of Police promised to work with all critical stakeholders through carefully drafted strategies and policies in line with the agenda of the Inspector General police to fight crime and respect the fundamental human rights of citizens.
He will face major challenges to the security and safety of lives and property in the State especially with the activities of Criminal gangs known as Bandits and that of Terror groups in surrounding States.
He is also expected to bring to a logical conclusion the case of the lynched Student of the Sheu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto. Deborah Emmanuel who was killed in a gruesome manner allegedly by fellow students of the Colleg.
The case which has seen the arrest of two suspects and an ongoing manhunt for the three main suspects has shattered the hitherto peaceful and relatively untainted reputation of Sokoto State despite several instances of religious and Ethnic based violence in several parts of the North.
The outcome will be a major measure of success or Otherwise for the new Police boss.
Other issues that will dominate his agenda will be keeping the peace as the State and Country move towards an expectedly volatile campaign period leading to the 2023 general Elections.
