Former Bayelsa state governor, Senator Seriake Dickson has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dickson, who is currently addressing a world press conference, said he is a man of conviction, warning that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is presently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

“The PDP is sick and presently in the ICU,” he lamented.

The senator also accused some governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of weakening the opposition by aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move he said has deepened the party’s internal crisis and eroded its strength as a credible opposition force.

He added that the country cannot afford to drift into a one-party state.

He said the development prompted him to seek a new political direction by joining the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), a recently registered political party approved by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Explaining his decision, Dickson said it had become necessary to pursue his political future on a platform that aligns with his present aspirations.

Following his remarks, the party’s leadership formally received him into its fold.

Dickson was presented with the party’s official flag and issued a membership card numbered “001,” signifying his position among the founding members of the NDC.

A notable figure in Nigeria’s opposition politics, Dickson served as governor of Bayelsa State between 2012 and 2020 before he was elected to the Senate in 2023 on the platform of the PDP.
