The Senate will today screen the immediate past Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Gwabin Musa, as Nigeria’s new Minister of Defence.
The announcement was made by the Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, who described the exercise as a critical step in strengthening national security, especially at a time the country is battling banditry, terrorism, and rising internal threats.
General Musa’s nomination follows the resignation of former Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru, who stepped down citing health reasons.
President Bola Tinubu has already forwarded the nomination letter to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, with plans for it to be read on the floor on Wednesday.
Senator Bamidele stressed that the Senate will not delay the screening, noting that President Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency on national security requires full cooperation between the Executive and the National Assembly.
He says the swift screening process will demonstrate that synergy and ensure the continuity of ongoing security operations across the country.
