The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed claims that the arrest of political activist Omoyele Sowore was unlawful or that he was tortured in custody.
Force Public Relations Officer DCP Olumuyiwa Adejobi said in a statement that Sowore’s arrest followed credible allegations of forgery, cyberstalking, and other offences currently under investigation.
Adejobi stressed that the arrest complied with legal provisions and constitutional safeguards, and that Sowore was released on bail within the 48-hour constitutional limit. He is expected to appear in court soon to answer the charges.
The police described as “false and grossly misleading” reports that Sowore was tortured, insisting the force maintains a zero-tolerance policy for such practices. Adejobi said a viral image showing Sowore with a bandaged arm had been misrepresented, explaining that the bandage was among his personal effects before arrest.
He added that Sowore twice declined offers for independent medical evaluation, with both refusals documented.
The police also rejected claims that his detention was arbitrary, saying it was backed by a valid court order, and urged the public and media to avoid sensationalism.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to human rights, the rule of law, and justice without fear or favour,” Adejobi said.
