The Police Service Commission (PSC) has warned that any senior police officer who fails its compulsory promotion examination three times will be mandatorily retired from service.
Chairman of the Commission, retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) Hashimu Argungu, issued the warning on Monday at the start of the promotion examination for 31 senior officers at the PSC headquarters in Abuja.
According to Argungu, officers who repeatedly fail the examination would be retired for “obvious incompetence”, stressing that the new Nigeria Police Force is merit-driven and rewards competence rather than seniority.
“The world is no longer a case of moving from one position to another without the requisite skills. Any officer who wants to advance in the Force must embrace the new realities,” he said.
Argungu added that the Commission is also taking steps to ensure proper due diligence to prevent dead or retired officers from being promoted in error.
He noted that although the compulsory promotion examination was coming late in the day, it represented an important reform aimed at restoring the prestige and professionalism of the Nigeria Police Force.
