The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a fresh warning about widespread rainfall and thunderstorms expected across the country from Monday through Wednesday, cautioning that flooding may occur in parts of Benue, Taraba, and Cross River States.
In its three-day weather forecast released on Sunday, NiMet predicted that moderate to heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, would affect large portions of northern Nigeria, with early morning storms expected in Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe, and Taraba on Monday.
Additional rainfall is anticipated later in the day in these areas.
Moving into the central region, residents in Niger, Kwara, FCT, Kogi, Benue, and Nasarawa should also brace for thunderstorms and intermittent rain showers, while southern states, including Oyo, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Cross River, can expect cloudy morning conditions, followed by moderate thunderstorms by afternoon or evening.

This pattern is forecast to persist through midweek, with alternating cloud cover, scattered thunderstorms, and light to moderate rainfall likely across various parts of the country.
NiMet further advised residents in flood-prone areas, especially in the highlighted high-risk states, to remain on alert and activate emergency response measures. Motorists are urged to avoid driving through floodwaters or during intense downpours to prevent accidents or being stranded.
Additional safety precautions include: Securing loose outdoor items that could be displaced by strong winds; Disconnecting electrical appliances during lightning storms; Avoiding shelter under trees to reduce the risk of lightning strikes or falling branches; Flight Operators and Public Urged to Stay Updated
NiMet also called on airline operators to ensure they obtain airport-specific weather reports for flight planning, stressing the importance of weather awareness for aviation safety.
