As part of its attempts to safeguard small enterprises, the Niger State Government has banned all forms of taxation on hawkers and minor traders throughout the state.

Governor Umaru Bago made the statement at Government House in Minna, asking Local Government Chairmen and Councillors to ensure full compliance.

He expressed concerns over the exploitation of minor traders through several levies, pointing out that the state’s centralised tax system had officially exempted them.

The governor said “We have observed with dismay how petty traders and hawkers are being exploited with multiple taxes. As a government, we have resolved that henceforth, no petty trader should be taxed. Hawkers and petty traders are now tax-free in Niger State.

“Anyone found violating this directive will be dealt with decisively for extortion.”

The governor’s directive is expected to provide relief to small-scale traders struggling to survive in the current economic climate.
