The Niger state government has said it plans to revitalise 53 Biwater schemes spread across 24 local councils to provide potable water for suburban communities.
It was 15 years ago that the water schemes supplied water to the inhabitants of farin doki in Paikoro local council in Niger state.
About 1000 households are settled here, they now turn to dug out wells and streams to get water.
Getting water from these sources are largely dependent on rain and they are also impacted by climate change.
The Niger State government, through its Ministry of Local Government, has commenced the inspection of 53 Biwater schemes across 24 local councils as means to solve the lingering water issues.
Commissioner in charge of the ministry Mu’azu Jantabo conducted an on-the-spot assessments of these schemes, that dates back to 1979.
These schemes stopped working due to damaged power systems and vandalism
These water schemes have the potential to bring much-needed relief to local communities grappling with water supply challenges .
