Lack of Proper Menstruation hygiene management is one of the major challenges confronting the girl child in rural communities, as many of them do not have the basic knowledge on how to handle their monthly periods.

In order to equip them with the needed knowledge, a non governmental organisation has put together an enlightenment programme and donated sanitary pads to female students in Ibara-Orile.

It’s been confirmed that Globally, close to 800 million adolescent girls and women menstruate everyday and about 500 million of them lack access to menstrual hygiene products and adequate facilities for hygienic management of menstruation.

According to the Nigeria Health Watch close to 37 million girls and women are unable to afford menstrual hygiene products and rely on alternatives such as clothes, leaves, or newspaper, leaving them exposed to infections and limited social mobility.

In order to guide against the challenges associated with handling of menstruation among girls in rural communities, a non governmental organisation has embarked on a project girls at Ajiboyede Comprehensive High School, Ibara-Orile.

While speaking about the impact of the project, the Vice Principal of the school, says the project will further equip the girls with required knowledge on the management of their menstruation.

beneficiaries say the pads donated will assist them and the orientation has given them required confidence to know that having monthly periods is not a challenge but part of them as girl child.

The foundation says Menstrual hygiene is a significant public health issue and with the enlightenment and support for 150 students in the school, they would reduce the risk of infections among the girls.
