Mr. Omar Alieu Touray of the Gambia has taken over as the new President of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Mr. Touray took over from Jean-Claude Kassi-Brou of La Cote d’Ivoire after 4 years in charge of the commission.
During the four years of his presidency, the outgoing President of the Commission claimed that the region’s democratic culture deepened despite the unconstitutional transfer of power in three ECOWAS member states.
Jean-Claude Kassi-Brou, in his final remarks as President, bemoaned terrorist attacks in the region that resulted in 14 thousand deaths and left over 5 million community members in need of humanitarian assistance.
This represents the immense task that now awaits the newly appointed President of the Ecowas Commission.
The Authority of Heads of State and Government of Ecowas authorised the change of guard in the leadership of the commission after President Jean-Claude Kassi Brou’s four-year tenure ended on July 3, 2022, in Accra.
As the Commission organises a step-up and step-down celebration, the new President is now ready to take office.
