The 15th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL) holds this week, between July 14 and 15, 2021, with a focus on how businesses can leverage technology to drive transformation.

According to the organisers, the conference, themed “Retooling Business for Change: Leveraging the Tech Explosion”, will feature an array of carefully selected speakers and panellists sourced from the ICT sector, governments, corporate bodies, law firms and law societies.

The yearly event is a platform for business lawyers within and outside Nigeria to network and engage on issues relevant to their fields as well as to establish a thriving relationship between the business community and government institutions.

This year, there will be a total of five plenary sessions on Day 1 of the two-day conference.

Also, Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, will deliver the opening address, and Dr. Wendy Okolo, who is the Intelligence Research Engineer, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), will give the keynote speech.

The first session, with the topic “Tech Innovation and E-Governance”, will be moderated by former Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Ifueko Omoigui-Okauru. The panelists include Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, Gabriel Okeowo, Principal Lead/CEO, BudgIT Nigeria, Honourable Justice Kashim Zannah, Chief Judge of Borno State, and Yewande Sadiku, the Executive Secretary/CEO of the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission.

Nigeria’s pioneer Minister of Communication Technology, Omobola Johnson, will moderate the fourth session titled, “Internet and Broadband Connectivity – Good or Bad?”, which as panellists, the Executive Vice Chairman of Nigeria Communications Commission, Gerald Ilukwe, along with stakeholders from the private sector.

While, Chairman of the NBA SBL, Ayuli Jemide, as well as Tobenna Erojikwe, Chairman Board of Governors, Institute of Continuing Legal Education will both moderate a session titled, We all have a story, that will attract discussions from leading commercial lawyers in Nigeria: Gbenga Oyebode, Asue Ighodalo and Myma Belo-Osagie.

The programme will also tackle the use of Technology and the future of elections in Nigeria: “E-Voting, mail voting; are we ready?”, with Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe; Former INEC Director, Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi; Author, Politician and International Development Consultant, Ayisha Osori; and UN International Elections Commissioner, Charlotte Osei, as discussants.
