More than 2,000 members of opposition parties have defected to Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress in Jigawa State, in a move that could shift the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.

Governor Umar Namadi received 2,004 defectors from the People’s Democratic Party and the New Nigeria People’s Party at a public event in Buji Local Government Area.

The governor said the defections showed growing confidence in the APC and its development efforts at both federal and state levels.

He added that more Nigerians were joining the party nationwide, as people recognise what he called the “massive infrastructure projects” delivered under the APC government.

Last week, the governor also welcomed 704 defectors from three other opposition parties in the state.

A political Scientist from the department of Political Science of federal university Dutse Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim say the steady movement of opposition members to the APC could strengthen the party’s position as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Governor Namadi urged the new members to work for the unity and progress of both Jigawa State and the country.
