Lawmakers task ECN on preparing Nigeria for renewable energy

The House of Representatives has urged the Energy Commission of Nigeria to leverage on available but scarce global and domestic resources to reposition Nigeria as a hub for alternative renewable energy in the African region.

Its Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation gave the charge during an oversight visit to some of the agencies it oversees.

Members of the Committee visited the headquarters of the Energy Commission of Nigeria to look into its books and assess its level of performance in the outgoing year ahead the budget defense exercise.

In his presentation, the Director General, Energy Commission of Nigeria, Jidare Bala said the appropriation for 2022 was 12.5 billion with 79.55% released.

Mr Bala took his guests through the workings of the Commission in the last one year, highlighting its achievements and challenges.

Crude oil is becoming less appealing and profitable in the new world order, the committee charged the agency with preparing Nigeria for renewable energy.

According to its Chairman, Beni, the ECN is the sole government body tasked with driving the UN Climate Change Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals in terms of energy sources and usage.

The National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion, NOTAP, is charged with advancing the country’s path as a technological hub.

According to the agency, revenue is expected to be N624 billion, with N406 billion generated in the previous year.

He also stated that the agency’s budget of N377 billion. So far, 263 billion have been released.
