The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences (Enforcement) Unit has intensified its crackdown on crime and environmental violations, arresting 49 suspects during a pre-dawn raid in Victoria Island and surrounding areas.
The operation, led by the Chairman of the Agency, CSP Adetayo Akerele, began around 1:00 a.m. on Monday and targeted known criminal enclaves and black spots, including the Maroko sandfill, Bonny Camp area, and other parts of Victoria Island.
The raid followed intelligence reports and complaints from residents concerned about rising insecurity and environmental degradation.
According to the taskforce, 48 men and one woman were apprehended for various offences, including illegal occupation, street-level crime, and environmental infractions. The arrests, authorities say, are part of broader efforts to reclaim public spaces and improve safety in the state.
CSP Akerele reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to maintaining law and order, stressing that criminal activity will not be tolerated in Lagos.
“Those who choose to undermine the peace and security of our communities must desist or be prepared to face the full weight of the law. We will not relent in our efforts to ensure a safer and cleaner Lagos,” he said.
He added that the taskforce will now carry out routine enforcement operations across the state at least three times a week, focusing on illegal settlements, black spots, and hideouts used by miscreants.
The goal, he said, is to systematically eliminate criminal elements and ensure the state remains secure and habitable for law-abiding residents.
All 49 suspects have since been charged to court in accordance with Lagos State laws.
The taskforce pledged to continue working towards creating a safer, cleaner, and more serene Lagos for all.
