The attorney general of Lagos state, Lawal Pedro (SAN) says the state government has initiated contempt proceedings against the national Assembly over the house of representative’s ‎passage of a new Central Gaming Bill for the whole of Nigeria.

‎The senior advocate who was speaking at a press briefing held to mark his second year in office, says this move by the federal lawmakers is in clear breach of the provisions of the Constitution of ‎the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

‎He adds that the passage of the controversial bill by the house of representations which he says is now awaiting concurrent passage by the Senate is in breach of a landmark decision by the Supreme Court in November 2024, which affirmed the constitutional ‎authority of Lagos State to regulate lotteries, thereby protecting State ‎revenue and entrenching fiscal federalism.

‎In his words, ” all persons and ‎authorities in Nigeria are bound by decisions and orders of the Supreme ‎Court.”

‎The AG also urged residents in default of payment of tax or revenue due to the State, to effect payment ‎immediately, as the revenue courts and the revenue recovery unit are now fully operational.

‎This is to ensure that money due to Lagos State is recovered
‎lawfully, so as to boost the State’s capacity to deliver critical services to the people.
