An election policy expert, Samson Itodo, has criticised recent developments in the Nigerian Senate, describing the amendment of its Standing Orders as a misuse of the lawmaking process.
Reacting to the move, Itodo said the development reflects a troubling trend where legislative procedures are used to settle political rivalries rather than serve the public interest.

He argued that parliamentary rules should strengthen democracy and promote institutional accountability, not be manipulated to influence future leadership contests or sideline perceived opponents.

According to him, lawmaking must not become a tool for elite survival but should remain focused on public service, democratic values and the protection of the common good.
“It’s a shame,” he said, expressing concern over the implications of the development for Nigeria’s democratic institutions.
