Ineffective metering remains a major problem to the success of power sector reforms in Nigeria.

The report by CSL Stockbrokers noted that some consumers avoid paying for power consumed through meter bypass, while others are made to pay for what they haven’t consumed through estimated billing.

According to the new draft meter regulation proposed by the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, electricity customers can now acquire meters under a 15-year lease facility from the discos guaranteed by third party meter providers.

The report stressed that effective metering view would be a step ahead in solving the myriad of problems battling the Nigerian power sector.

The commission should hold consultations with the consumers on how best to fund the cost of prepaid meters. Even as at today there are consumers who are ready to pay for the meters on cash and carry basis.
