INEC urges security agencies to partner media, CSOs ahead 2023

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC says it is reviewing the rules of engagement and codes of conduct for security agencies ahead of the 2023 general election.

INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this at the opening of a two-day retreat for the House Committee on Army security agencies and the civil society community.

The general elections of 2023 is approximately 112 days away, and all major players are stepping up their efforts to ensure a smooth process.

A two-day retreat to strengthen the capacity of security agencies, politicians, and the civil society community is one of such initiatives.

The Role of Security Agencies and Interagency collaboration in the Electoral Process’ was up for discussion.

In his keynote address, INEC Chairman, represented by an official, Labari Ndu commended the security agencies for their collaborations in past elections.

He said the commission is reviewing the contract between it and the security agencies under the Inter Consultative Committee on Election Security, ICCES.

Other stakeholders spoke on the need for security agencies to be professional in their conduct, before, during and after the elections.

Trainings such as these will become more frequent in weeks ahead as the country prepares for the 2023 general election.
