The House of Representatives warmly congratulates the Speaker of the 10th Assembly, Abbas Tajudeen, on the momentous occasion of his 60th birthday.
This Diamond Jubilee is more than a personal milestone. It is a celebration of a life defined by service, sacrifice, and excellence across academia, the traditional institution, the private sector, and public life. From his formative years as a scholar to his rise as a national leader, Mr Speaker has consistently demonstrated humility, vision, and an unyielding commitment to national development and progressive ideals.
Under his distinguished leadership, the House of Representatives has charted a new course in legislative excellence, recording many firsts. Despite being one of the most politically diverse parliaments in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, with eight political parties represented and 77 percent of Members serving their first term, the House has made remarkable progress in just over two years. This is a testament to the Speaker’s rare gift for building consensus.
Having served in the Green Chamber since 2011, Speaker Abbas has drawn from years of parliamentary experience and cultivated strong relationships across party, regional, and institutional lines. These bonds, combined with his calm and consultative style, have enabled him to foster unity, build trust, and guide one of the most diverse parliaments in Nigeria’s history with stability and productivity. His humility, accessibility, and proven ability to build consensus continue to define his leadership.
In his tribute, the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, described Speaker Abbas as “a true democrat and a leader par excellence, whose consistent demonstration of nation-building qualities and pragmatic leadership has resulted in remarkable accomplishments.”
“I wish to commend your exemplary, selfless, and inclusive leadership, as well as your commitment to uniting the nation. Since the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly in June 2023, you have shown uncommon dedication to strengthening our democracy and promoting good governance through effective representation,” he stated.
Inspired by his leadership, Honourable Members have been motivated to stand with Nigerians in times of need, extending legislative support and direct assistance to states and communities during natural disasters, conflicts, and humanitarian crises.
Guided by its 8-Point Legislative Agenda (2023–2027), one of the most ambitious in Nigeria’s parliamentary history, the House has passed over 237 bills, with about 55 already signed into law. These legislative accomplishments cover critical sectors, improving public financial management, enhancing citizen trust, and expanding civic participation.
Through deliberate reforms, Speaker Abbas has also championed transparency and inclusivity in the legislative process. The House has expanded public access to parliamentary proceedings through digital innovation, strengthened engagement with young Nigerians, and enhanced oversight of more than 200 Ministries, Departments, and Agencies. His personal advocacy for civic education, his fight against gender-based violence, and his dedication to women’s empowerment remain enduring hallmarks of his leadership.
True to character, Mr Speaker has chosen not to mark his 60th birthday with elaborate celebrations. Instead, he will observe the day, Wednesday, October 1, 2025, in quiet reflection, charitable giving, and humanitarian outreach. He has urged Nigerians to join him in prayers and in acts of kindness and service to humanity.
As we celebrate him at 60, we honour a statesman whose legacy is firmly woven into the democratic evolution of our Republic. We pray that this new chapter brings him greater wisdom, enduring health, and the continued grace to serve Nigeria with distinction.
The House of Representatives proudly salutes his leadership and joins his family, colleagues, and the Nigerian people in marking this landmark occasion.
