Kwara State Governor and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, has urged Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey, describing June 12 as a tribute to the men and women who championed democracy—often at great personal cost.
In a statement to mark Democracy Day, the governor honoured the memory of those who paid the ultimate price in the fight for democratic governance, while commending the resilience of Nigerians in sustaining democratic values.
“Democracy allows for robust engagement among stakeholders to chart a collective course for progress. The diversity of opinions we witness today is a testament to the vibrancy of our democratic space,” he noted.
Governor AbdulRazaq acknowledged the country’s developmental challenges but stressed that Nigeria has made measurable progress in areas such as infrastructure and soft power indicators.
“We should not lose sight of these gains or undermine them in any way, even as we work together to build a stronger nation,” he said.
He congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leadership of the National Assembly, the judiciary, the media, and members of the civic space for their roles in advancing democratic engagement.
“Happy Democracy Day, compatriots,” the statement concluded.
