The Ogun State Police Command has warned the public against providing false information to security agencies, stating that such actions violate sections of the Criminal Code Act and are punishable under Nigerian law.

In a Friday statement shared on X by the Ogun Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the Command stated that the actions violate the Cybercrimes Prohibition and Prevention Act of 2015.

This warning follows the widespread controversy surrounding TikToker Mirabel’s rape claims, as emerging details have led many to perceive her story as a false allegation.

He wrote, “Do you know that giving false information, generally, especially to the Police or any public authority, is a criminal offence under Nigerian law?

“Under the Criminal Code Act, anyone who knowingly gives false information to mislead a public officer commits an offence and is liable to imprisonment, fine, or both.”

He added, “The Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, et.) Act, 2015 also prescribes penalties for intentionally spreading false information electronically, including on social media.”

Babaseyi further explained that false information wastes government resources, obstructs investigations, and creates unnecessary panic.

“Offenders will be investigated and prosecuted Verify before you share. Speak the truth, be law-abiding,” he concluded.

TVC News previously reported that the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has officially transferred the case of the viral TikToker, Mirabel, to the Ogun State Police Command, citing jurisdictional review, which confirms that the alleged rape incident took place in the state.

In a Wednesday statement shared on the agency’s official X handle cited by TVC News, LSDVA assured the public that the incident, which occurred in February, will continue with full vigour despite the change in command.

The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, also announced that the case has been transferred to the Ogun command, citing jurisdiction reasons.
