Flooding: Over 3 million impacted, death toll now 612-NEMA

Floods have wrought serious havoc on many states and communities, bringing unimaginable hardship on their inhabitants.

A situation report by the Ministry of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development, as at 24th October, put the number of persons affected by the 2022 floods at about three million, two hundred and nineteen thousand, seven hundred and eighty.

Out of this number, about 1 million, 427 thousand, three hundred and seventy persons have been displaced

The death toll has now increased to six hundred and twelve people, from the 500 deaths recorded about a month ago

This was contained in a situation report by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development given to TVC News by the Ministry.

Emergency relief materials have now been given to 21 states affected by the floods.

The statement also says distribution to other States affected by the flood is ongoing.

The Ministry has swung into action providing relief materials, including food and non food items, especially for people that have now become homeless due to this situation

Nigeria already faces dire food insecurity from the nefarious activities of bandits and the impact of covid-19, this has now been compounded by the floods.

According to the reports, one hundred and seventy-six thousand, eight hundred and fifty-two hectares of farmlands have been partially damaged, while another three hundred and ninety-two thousand, three hundred and ninety-nine hectares of farmlands have been completely destroyed.

Despite all of the negative news, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs,Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farouq, commended community efforts in search and rescue operations.

She assured that efforts to mitigate the impact of the flood will continue and says daily updates will be made available in the Ministry’s and NEMA’S official website.
