The Nigerian Government has decided to streamline the Sustainable Development Goals in line with its National Development policies
This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the President on SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope- Adefulire in Abuja while speaking to newsmen at the opening of a National Consultation Conference on preparing a Voluntary Report on the Sustainable Development Goals .
Statehouse Correspondent Tai Amodu reports that a lot of the Millennium Development Goals were not met within the time frame it ran, and stakeholders have blamed this on the fact that there was no effective monitoring process and the fact that Nigerian citizens were not involved in the implementation process nor were they made to own the MDG projects.
Many of the MDGs not achieved have been rolled over into the Sustainable Development Goals and the Nigerian Government is determined to ensure that mistakes of the past are addressed.
One of the measures put in place to ensure this, is Nigeria’s decision to open itself to scrutiny by the United Nations and its member states through the preparation of a Voluntary report on the progress it has made so far
The Nigeria Government believes it has started well on the SDGs having been able through advocacy, to sensitize Nigerians on the need to collectively work towards implementing the development goals
Stakeholders speak on why they believe country will better succeed in the implementation of the SDGs and why this Forum is important.
Nigeria is expected to, along with some other member states, present its voluntary report by July this year at a UN meeting in New York.
