The Federal Government has declared Thursday, 12th June 2025, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day celebration.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government, as contained in a statement signed by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani, and released on Sunday.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians on the occasion, marking 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance.
“June 12 represents our historic journey to building a nation where truth and justice reign, peace is sustained, and our future assured,” the minister was quoted as saying.
Reflecting on the democratic journey since 1999, the minister noted: “The last 26 years tell the story of our resilience, strength and courage—and a hope renewed more than ever.”
He emphasised that democracy thrives on continuous improvement and reiterated the Tinubu administration’s commitment to upholding democratic values rooted in the freely expressed will of the people.
Tunji-Ojo reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope” agenda, describing it as a commitment to the universal values of democracy in shaping Nigeria’s political, economic, social and cultural future.
