The Federal Government has approved the request of the Lagos State Government for the construction of the Lekki airport in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government area of the state.

The Lekki airport would be constructed around the Lekki Free Zone (LFZ) and is expected to assist manufacturers and other business owners within the zone to transport their products abroad.

The new airport is expected to offer individuals and corporate organisations options from the existing facilities across the state.

The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, announced the approval and handed over the approval documents to the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the Ehingbeti Economic Summit in Victoria Island axis of the state.

The new Airport has been planned for the Lekki axis since the initial planning for the Lekki Free Trade Zone during the administration of Former Lagos State Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Airport was conceived as part of the Transport Infrastructure designed to bring goods and Services out of the area to Other parts of the State.

Other Transport Infrastructure conceived as part of the Lekki Free Trade Zone were the Lekki Epe Expressway, the Lekki Deep Seaport, the Blue Line Rail Extension from Marina to Lekki and Others.

The Lagos State Government has made the Airport a priority following the expanding number of businesses and Corporate Organisations moving towards the Lekki-Epe Axis of the State.

Completing the rail links between Lekki and Other parts of the State has been highlighted as a priority project as encapsulated in the THEMES agenda of the Babajide Olusola Sanwoolu led Lagos State Government.

Construction is now expected to start in earnest on the Airport which is expected to serve as a Transport Hub for the growing businesses around the Lekki-Epe axis to support the biggest Fertilizer and Petrochemical Complex in the world built by the Dangote Group.

The Dangote refinery which is expected to help in reducing Nigeria’s dependence on foreign refined Petroleum products.
