The proposed allocation to the Defence and Security sector in the 2024 Budget is N3.25 trillion, representing 12 per cent of the entire budget.

While this is the highest ever, experts say the size of the allocation is not as important as its performance when eventually passed into law.

The race is on to meet the deadline for passing the 2024 appropriation bill into law, as requested by President Bola Tinubu during the presentation of the budget before the National Assembly.

Public engagements have begun. And these will pave the way for Ministries and Departments to appear before standing committees of the National Assembly to defend the increasing allocations.

Defence and Security was given the highest allocation of N3.25 trillion, representing 12 per cent of the entire budget.

This Defence and Security expert says a lot needs to be considered in the legislative approval stage.

He wants the legislative scrutiny of the appropriation bill to be by line item budget.

It’s a similar view for this civil society advocate.

Both professionals agree that beyond the sectoral allocations for the 2024 budget, what matters most is the performance of the appropriation bill when eventually passed into law.
