Officials of the Nigeria Prisons Services in Gombe on Thursday beat up and detained the grieving relative of a prisoner who died in the custody of the service.

The incident was captured by TVC camera.

Correspondent Lanre Adeyemi has the reports that drama unfolded at the Gombe specialist hospital when two siblings of a deceased detainee accused officials of the prisons service of killing their brother while he was in their custody.

They also alleged that the prisons service did not provide the deceased, Nura Nuhu adequate medical care while ill before he was brought to the hospital dead.

While both were weeping and being consoled by hospital staff, officers of the prison service came into the hospital, beating up the relatives and detaining one of them in the full glare of journalists.

Regardless of the offense, the Nigerian constitution protects the rights of all accused persons and presumes them innocent until convicted by a competent court of law.

What led to the death of Muhammed Nuhu in prison custody may be unknown, but the abuse of his grieving brother is a clear violation of his right.
