The House of Representatives adhoc Committee on Complaints of Electricity Consumers have started its investigations.
The committee said issues around estimated billing and non-availability of prepaid meters need to be addressed to enable Nigerians enjoy the benefits of privatisation.
Energy correspondent, Tolulope Ogunjobi reports that it is really tough times for the electricity distribution companies operating across the country, as Nigerians continue to lament their poor services.
First, it was the generation companies, then followed by industry regulators, consumers and most recently the legislators are out with a bill to criminalize estimated billings.
At the gathering made of electricity consumers which cut across all the south western states…and they all had similar challenges.
The level of consumption of electricity is determined by the electricity meter, a device that measures the amount of energy used by a resident and business owners.
Lawmakers said they will not hesitate to review the entire privatisation exercise if need be, to enable them address the concerns raised by the consumers.
Data from the Nigerian electricity regulatory commission shows that more than 3 million out of the 7.47 million customers nationwide have prepaid meters.
This means only 45 percent of customers have access to the meters, a situation the regulatory body says will soon be a thing of the past.
