Every year, between August and October, Igbos sons and daughters from all over the world attend the annual event.

In Igbo land, the new yam festival is seen as a platform where people celebrate the bounty harvest after a farming season.

Nkerefi is one of the 17 prominent communities in the Nkanu East Local Government Area, and it has a long history.

The culture also demonstrates that the traditional ruler must travel around major streets which denotes the start of the New Year’s yam festival

The gathering of elders from the four towns and from outside the community followed.

Ndigbo believes that without braking of the yam, natives are not permitted to eat it.

This year new yam festival in Nkerefi community featured different cultural displays as traditional titles were bestowed on indigenes who have contributed to the development of their community.

Special adviser to governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi on Afric development Mike Ogwuekwe and former Secretary to the state Government Godwin Ajah were among the indigenes decorated with the traditional titles
