Muslims in Indonesia and Malaysia celebrated Eid Al-adha on Friday praying and slaughtering livestock to be distributed among family and friends and the poor.
Indonesian Muslims in Jakarta attended celebrations and hoped to promote tolerance and respect among citizens amidst the nation’s fight against religious extremism.
At a slaughter ceremony in Shah Alam, on the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysian Muslims condemned terror acts in the name of Islam, saying that such acts were against the religious concept of sacrifice.
Eid-al-Adha, also known as the Sacrifice Feast, is celebrated to commemorate Prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail on God’s command. It also marks the end of the annual Haj or pilgrimage to Mecca.
