A non-governmental organisation, “The satisfied soul initiative”, has advised Nigerian youths to stay off drugs as it is said to be one of the causes of recent suicide cases.
The group gave this advice at a free medical outreach in Ketu, Lagos state.
Correspondent Theophilus Elamah reports that Nigeria has been consumed by the rising menace of drug abuse. Instead of just being a dot on the consciousness, the tragic phenomenon now cuts across all strata of the society.
Along with non-state actors, a non-governmental organisation has taken the campaign against this menace to the Ketu area of Lagos state.
At the root of the nuisance is the breakdown in societal values. They, however called on the government to put measures and policies in place so as to stem the tide of drug abuse by youths.
Drug or substance abuse, according to the world health organisation, is the harmful or hazardous use of psychoactive substances including alcohol and illicit drugs.
This could result in dependence syndrome which often develops after repeated substance use and strong desire to take drugs.
