COP27: World leaders urge faster action on climate change, other crisis

World leaders have pushed each other to move quicker to reduce pollution that is warming the world, while also acknowledging the global energy effects of the Ukraine conflict and the unequal effects of climate change to date.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine, supported by the sale of Russian gas, casts a dark shadow over these talks.

The conflict has shaken the global energy market, fueled inflation, and prompted some to advocate for increased oil and gas production.

Meanwhile, poorer nations affected by climate change are becoming more and more irate with wealthy nations whose emissions are causing global warming. And relations between the two countries that pollute the most, the United States and China, have never been worse.

Several pavilions devoted to the promotion of oil and gas were dispersed around the large conference center. In order to advertise itself as an energy powerhouse, Saudi Arabia paid for an extraordinarily huge space. OPEC displayed what it referred to as its worldwide development fund there. The natural gas deposits in Mauritania were touted.

“We are on a highway to climate hell with our foot on the accelerator,” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres told a gathering of more than 100 princes, presidents, and prime ministers at the 27th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Climate Convention, known as COP27, on Monday.
