A heavy police presence was seen outside Catalonia’s parliament building ahead of a planned session to swear-in candidate Carles Puigdemont which later was postponed by parliament speaker Roger Torrent.
Torrent insisted that former leader Carles Puigdemont, in self-exile at Brussels, was the only viable candidate to lead Catalonia and said the session will be postponed until they have “legal guarantees” to celebrate another one.
Spain’s Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy reiterated that Puigdemont could not be a candidate as he was in exile in Brussels after a warrant for his arrest was ordered, after he made an illegal declaration of independence end-October.
