Troops of Sector 3 of the Joint Task Force (North-East), Operation HADIN KAI, have repelled a terrorist attack on a military position in Monguno, Borno State, but lost a commanding officer and six soldiers in the aftermath.

The attack, described as an isolated incident, occurred late on Sunday, April 12, 2026, at the Charlie 13 location, where troops engaged insurgents in a fierce gun battle.

According to a statement by the Media Information Officer of the task force, Lieutenant Colonel Sani Uba, on Monday, the troops successfully forced the attackers to retreat and retained control of the location.

However, tragedy struck shortly after the engagement when the commanding officer, who was moving to the frontline to assess the situation, encountered an improvised explosive device (IED).

The military described the late officer’s actions as a reflection of exemplary leadership and sacrifice.

“His actions, even after the immediate threat had been neutralised, reflected the highest traditions of military leadership; courage, selfless service, and leading from the front,” the statement reads.

“His willingness to move towards the troops in the heat of the battle, despite the prevailing danger, stands as a profound testament to his valour, sense of duty, and unwavering commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of his men.”

The task force expressed deep sorrow over the loss, noting that the fallen personnel paid the ultimate price in service to the nation.
