For many women, the Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) has become more than a cosmetic choice, it is now a statement of transformation.

The procedure, which transfers fat from areas like the abdomen and thighs to the buttocks, promises fuller curves, a more symmetrical figure, and a confidence boost.

Over the years, the BBL has grown into one of the most sought-after cosmetic procedures in Nigeria, as women chase the idealised hourglass figure: bigger buttocks, slim waists, and proportionate curves.

Social media platforms and the Nigerian blogosphere amplify the trend, with influencers and aesthetic professionals showcasing “before and after” transformations that promise dramatic results.

But the surge in popularity comes with a dark side. The procedure is expensive, with costs ranging from N6 million to N10 million in Lagos, covering consultation, surgery, and post-operative care.

Yet the steep price tag hasn’t slowed demand.

More concerning, unlicensed clinics and quacks have capitalised on the craze, offering quick fixes and unregulated procedures that endanger lives.

One tragic example is the late Lagos-based socialite, Elena Jessica, whose second BBL procedure ended in complications that claimed her life.

Medical professionals warn that while a properly performed BBL can safely reshape the body, patients must be wary of shortcuts. The procedure requires careful planning, skilled surgeons, and strict adherence to post-operative care to avoid life-threatening outcomes.

Despite the risks, many women continue to flock to aesthetic clinics, motivated by the promise of dramatic transformations and social media admiration.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, below are 8 step-by-step breakdown of the BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift) process, from consultation to recovery:

1. Initial Consultation
Meet your plastic surgeon to discuss your goals, review your medical history, and undergo a physical exam. This helps determine if a BBL is suitable for you.

2. Anesthesia Administration
On surgery day, anesthesia ensures comfort:

  • IV sedation with local anesthesia – relaxed and pain-free
  • General anesthesia – fully asleep during the procedure

3. Marking & Planning
The surgeon marks donor areas (abdomen, thighs, love handles) and plans where fat will be harvested and injected, ensuring precise shaping.

4. Liposuction
Excess fat is carefully removed from donor areas through small incisions using specialized instruments. This also smooths the areas where fat is removed.

5. Fat Processing & Purification
The harvested fat is purified to remove impurities, leaving only healthy fat cells for transfer. This ensures the best survival rate and results.

6. Fat Injection
Purified fat is strategically injected into different layers of the buttocks to add volume, improve shape, and create symmetry based on your anatomy and aesthetic goals.

7. Incision Closure
Liposuction incisions are closed with sutures. The cuts are small and discreetly placed, minimizing visible scarring.

8. Recovery and Post-Operative Care
After surgery, you’ll be monitored in a recovery area as anesthesia wears off. You’ll wear compression garments, take prescribed painkillers, and follow detailed post-op instructions to reduce swelling, promote healing, and achieve the best results. Follow-up monitors swelling, with final results visible after 3-12 months. Initial recovery involves no sitting on buttocks for 2-3 weeks to aid fat survival (60-80% retention).

Outcome: Your buttocks appear fuller and more symmetrical, while the areas where fat was removed are smoother and contoured.
