A Consultative Forum of the Muslim Constituency in Northern Nigeria has urged Nigerians to elect leaders based on the candidate’s ability to build bridges of consensus across the country.
The group says using religious and ethnic sentiments as a yard stick to influence their political decision is against the tenets of Democracy
The Forum also tasked all Presidential Candidates to be committed to meeting the aspirations of Nigerians by guaranteeing peace and security of the country and ensuring unity and prosperity of all citizens.
According to them , Nigerians must reaffirm their commitment to the core values of the leading faiths in Nigeria and reject all attempts to discriminate against any Presidential ticket based on religion.
There have been murmurs on the emergence of candidates on the platform of Political Parties across the country with the emergence of Presidential Candidates particularly a sour point that has create schism in some parties while Others have remained relatively stable despite this.
The All Progressives Congress which is the ruling party was initially condemned for the choice of the same faith ticket of two Muslims from both the South and North but this has dissipated overtime with many now looking more at the competence or Otherwise of the candidates.
The Labour party also had its own fair share of schism precipitate by the emergence of Peter Obi as Presidential candidate with a back and forth over Leadership still very much in play though this has not affected the candidate as much.
For the former ruling party, The peoples Democratic Party, the emergence of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has been a major source of crisis that still remains largely unsolved with five governors elected under the platform of the party le by Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, and prominent Leaders of the party including former Governors still up in arms over his emergence.
The charge by the Muslim Consultative Group in Northern Nigeria for Nigerians to vote competence is a sign that the furore over same faith Ticket is now over.
