Lawmakers from the Ondo State House of Assembly have agreed with the people of Okonla, Zion Community that a river which runs through the town needs to dredged.

Members of the house committee on Oil Producing Communities paid an assessment visit to the area, after an appeal from the residents. They believe the dredging will boost socioeconomic activities, as TVC’s Ayodeji Moradeyo reports.

Okonla village in Zion Community of Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State, is one of several coastal communities in the State. It is a community that links others in the area through a river. The community is regarded as a commercial town, because of its proximity to twenty others.

The major problem facing people of the community is that, the river dries-up seasonally.

The situation forced members of the Ondo State House of Assembly Committee on Oil Producing Communities to visit the area.

Members of the committee, led by the chairman, Malachi Coker appealed to the relevant government agencies to dredge the river.

Other members of the committee also spoke on the need for government to do the needful. The traditional ruler of the town is not happy with the condition of the river. He said the situation is affecting socioeconomic activities in the community.

People of the community who depend largely on water for transportation and fishing, want quick intervention in the matter.
