The Nigerian Police has assured citizens that the force has capacity to provide adequate security for lives and property, especially for motorists along the Lagos Ibadan/Expressway.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police in Charge of South West, Johnson Kokumo made this known during his assessment visit to different sections of the expressway.
Working inline with the directive of the Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba, the Deputy Inspector General in charge of the South West has led the Commissioner of Police Ogun State Command and other senior Police officers to assess the present security situation on the Expressway.
The team moved from the connecting point of Lagos and Ogun upward to Ogunmakin and Onigari, very close to the Oyo State section of the Expressway.
Policemen and their vans were strategically located at the both side of the expressway in order to prevent kidnappers and other criminal elements to carry out their illicit activities.
He noted that they will increase Police visibility and ensure that the Expressway is safe for people at all times.
The DIG also met the management of a construction company along the Expressway to seek for collaboration in the spirit of Community Policing.
He added that aside from Policemen located at different locations and the patrol team, they will also use technology to ensure adequate security on Lagos Ibadan Expressway.
The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has been in the news for the wrong reasons in the last few weeks following attacks by unknown gunmen on travellers on the nations’ busiest highway.
The attacks had raised fears among road users, the Lagos, Oyo and Ogun States Government that the Nations’ busiest highway may become almost impassable like the Abuja-Kaduna highway and some roads within Sokoto and Zamfara States.
People have suffered injuries and abduction on the road including a former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Adigun Agbaje, who was abducted and released a few days after the payment of ransom.
