The Osun State Police Command has said it has not received any official briefing regarding the escape of seven inmates from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ilesa.
Police spokesperson, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed that while the Command is aware of the reported prison break, the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has yet to formally notify them of the incident.
“We also heard about the escape, but there is no official report made to the police by the NCoS,” Ojelabi stated.
He added that intelligence gathered by the Command suggests that an escape did occur, but the circumstances remain unclear.
“Our officers have visited the facility, and from the intelligence report we received, there is nothing concrete yet to determine the cause of the escape,” he said.
As of the time of reporting, details surrounding how the inmates managed to flee the facility remain uncertain, and the police have not confirmed any arrests or recaptures.
