Updated: FG, Labour leaders meet in Abuja over minimum wage

The Federal Government and leadership of the organised labour are currently meeting in Abuja over the minimum wage issue with the aim of finding a solution to the controversy surrounding the new minimum wage of N30,000.

The meeting started few minutes past one o clock, is holding at the Ministry of Labour and Employment and both parties expressed optimism for truce.

In his opening remarks, Labour and Employment Minister, Chris Ngige, reiterates Buhari administration’s commitment to the welfare of workers.

He said the meeting was to brief Labour about efforts the government has been making to ensure a new and acceptable minimum wage comes into being. He enjoins labour leaders in attendance to seek clarifications where necessary, adding that all efforts are geared towards averting organised labour planned nationwide strike

Responding on behalf of organised labour, NLC President, Ayuba Wabba, said negotiation no longer the issue but the submission of the new National Minimum Wage bill to the National Assembly as well.as it’s prompt passage and implementation.

One of the labour leaders said government must give a commitment as to when the bill will.be transmitted to the National Assembly before planned strike can be shelved.

At the meeting are the Finance Minister, Zainab Ahmed, Budget and National Planning Minister, Udo Udoma and representatives of the Salaries and Wages Commission , among other relevant functionaries.

The meeting is still ongoing as at the time of filing this report.
