The United Nations has urged Iranian authorities to “immediately release thousands of individuals being arbitrarily held for their involvement in peaceful demonstrations.

Speaking to reporters on Friday in New York, UN Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq said that all efforts must be made to avoid further escalation and authorities should address the legitimate grievances of the population.

According to the Spokesperson, the UN is “deeply worried about growing violence related to the ongoing popular protests and condemns all incidents that have resulted in death or serious injury, including the shooting in the city of Izeh on 16 November 2022.”

The UN also said it is concerned about the reported issuance of death sentences against five unnamed individuals in the context of the latest protests,” added Haq.

The Spokesperson also said that the UN underlines that the authorities must respect their obligations under international human rights law, including in particular with regard to the human rights of women and the rights to peaceful assembly, freedom of expression and freedom of association.

The UN reiterated that the security forces must avoid all disproportionate use of force against peaceful protestors” and “those responsible must be held accountable.”
