U.S. President Donald Trump drew laughter after making a joke about rapper Nicki Minaj during the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) dinner in Washington, D.C.

According to WION, the annual event, held on Friday at the Waldorf Astoria, brought together about 700 journalists, administration officials and members of Trump’s Cabinet. It was rescheduled after the original April gathering was disrupted by an alleged assassination attempt on the president.

Reflecting on the April incident, Trump injected humor into his remarks with an unexpected reference to the Grammy-nominated rapper.

“But after hearing the gunshots, many people yelled ‘Get down, get down,’ which caused Nicki Minaj to start twerking. Get down – she’s the only one who really understood it.”

The joke quickly attracted attention before the president shifted to a more solemn message, condemning political violence and calling for disagreements to be resolved through dialogue.

“Tonight we come back together to answer that heinous attack with unwavering resolve, and every one of us here this evening to show that in America we do not yield to political violence,” Trump said.

Trump also recognized U.S. Secret Service officer Victor Gonzales, who was injured while responding to the April attack, praising his actions during the incident.

The president’s latest comments add to a series of public references involving Nicki Minaj in recent months. The rapper has been associated with several White House events during Trump’s second term, including the Trump Accounts Summit and a Rose Garden luncheon, where the president publicly praised her.

At one of those events, Trump described Minaj as “so respected and so hot and so great” and “a fantastic person.”
