Seven people have died following a lone road crash along the Kiyawa–Azare Road in Jigawa State.

The crash happened on Sunday at about 4:30pm near Jigawan Kurma village in Kiyawa Local Government Area.

Police say a Toyota Hummer Bus, travelling from Kano to Potiskum with 18 passengers on board, suddenly lost control after its two rear tyres burst while on speed.

The vehicle somersaulted several times before veering off the road.

A team from the Motor Traffic Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer in Kiyawa, arrived at the scene quickly for rescue operations.

According to the police, seven people including the 70-year-old driver, Mallam Ibrahim Potiskum died on the spot.

Eleven others were rushed to the General Hospital in Dutse.

Four victims have since been treated and discharged, while the rest remain on admission.

The police have secured all recovered luggage and deposited the bodies at the hospital mortuary.

Efforts are underway to identify and contact the families of the victims.

The Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP Dahiru Muhammad, has expressed condolences to the affected families and prayed for the quick recovery of survivors.

He also reminded motorists to carry out routine safety checks, maintain their vehicles properly, and drive with caution especially on long-distance routes where tyre bursts, speed, and fatigue remain leading causes of fatal crashes in Nigeria.

Road safety experts say Nigeria records thousands of preventable road deaths every year, and tyre-related crashes continue to rank among the top contributors.
